Cells At Work!: The reason you’re living

Cells At Work! is funny and honest and I’m here for all of the things I should know about human biology.

I saw a trailer of its first season back in college (2015). I’ve always been interested but I never got the chance to watch it because of school activities. Come 2021, Netflix recommended it to me after I watched The Way of the Househusband, and as I’ve suspected I loved every second of it!

Last week, I was ecstatic to see the show now has a second season! I immediately put myself in binge mode.

Cells At Work is a comedic story of how our body operates from the inside. It stars two blood cells: White Blood Cell U-1146 and Red Blood Cell AE3803.

Although shorter than the first one, Season 2 is still as interesting with new types of viruses and bacteria as antagonists. The thing I love most about this show is how we don’t have to think twice on who we should support. On some shows, I tend to at least try to understand what the antagonists’ motives are, and I try to see them as a human being while hating them, but in Cells at Work, the bad guys are the viruses, bacteria, etc. that would probably kill a person if they’re not protected from them.

However, this show has also, weirdly, made me pity cancer cells… I don’t know much about biology, but I know the basics, and I know that cancer cells should be removed from the body, otherwise it would spread uncontrollably and would grow until it makes it impossible to remove them all in the body.

There’s a scene in the first season where the white blood cells are looking for two cancer cells that have escaped. It turns out, these are two young cancer cells who have just witnessed the murder of their seniors.

It has always been said that prevention is better than cure, and this case, it would be best to cease the young cancer cells before they spread further. However, since it’s a show and I see the cancer cells as human kids, I can’t help but feel empathy. They pointed out that they didn’t wish to be born as that kind of cells, in fact, they didn’t wish to be born at all, what have they done wrong?

I was dumbfounded after that episode. It somehow reminded me of that question I heard in some true crime documentary: Are serial killers born evil or is it something they learned?

Also, since the cells are drawn as humans, I love how this show promotes bayanihan or unity, cooperation. They don’t know why they do what they do but they know without their effort, some cells would suffer, they know without other cells, they would suffer. Something the world would definitely need right now, a sense of knowing each of us has a purpose greater than our own selfish goals. In this case, the cells only wanted to keep everyone safe. It appears to me they’re not aware that their inside of a person’s body? I may be wrong.

I also noticed that this human’s body is going through a lot of things all at once! I don’t know if it’s normal for a human to get that much of attacks or this person is just… really going through a lot.

The release date for the third season is yet to be announced, but some articles say that an upcoming season is most likely to be produced, and I’m here to devour every minute of it. It would interesting to see an episode on COVID-19 and its different variants. I’d love to see a more accessible and easier way to learn what cause a global pandemic for the future generation.

Stay safe!
